If I were an athlete in Russia, I could be arrested. If I decide to attend next year's Sochi Olympics as a spectator, I could be punished for being who I am. As a member of the LGBT community, I believe there is nothing more important than standing in solidarity with LGBT athletes and the LGBT community facing discrimination and terror in Russia.

I'm asking athletes to show LGBT people in Russia that they are not alone, and that the world supports them, by wearing a rainbow pride pin on their uniform at the opening ceremonies.

For those who haven't heard, Russia recently passed new legislation that criminalizes "Gay Propaganda."  This means that anyone who is gay, is suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay can go to jail.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) say they may disqualify athletes for wearing "political propaganda" at the games. But if the IOC announces that they will disqualify athletes for expressing who they are, they will be acting in support of Russia's disgusting laws. I don't believe they will do that.

If enough people sign and if enough athletes and teams declare their support we will generate a beautiful, powerful message of solidarity for the whole world to see.

There is strength in numbers and the more countries that we can have committed to a message of love could make a real difference in the world of international politics.

So what can you do?

1. Share this message of love and acceptance and help promote more support for this campaign by sharing the petition by email and on Facebook and tweeting it with the hashtag #GoldMedalMessage

2.Contact your Olympic team. Email, phone, tweet or carrier pigeon a quick letter to your team and your favorite athletes asking them to show their support for the LGBT community by wearing a rainbow pin at Sochi 2014.

As LGBT activists in Russia are already asking: "Do not boycott the Olympics – boycott homophobia! Stand in solidarity with people in Russia and bring LGBT pride and values of human rights and freedoms to the games in Sochi!"

Thank you for all the comments and faves. I used to take pride in thanking everybody individually but unfortunately, time constraints have made that impossible these days. It really means so much when you fave or comment or send me a note that I feel guilty hoping you will see this blanket "thank you".
